There is no universal number of times professional hairdressing scissors can be sharpened before they need to be replaced.
Two identical pairs can be sharpened the same number of times and still have very different amounts of usable life left.

The key is preserving the geometry
Hairdressing scissors need more than a sharp edge.
It is important to preserve the blade shape, cutting edges and correct blade contact along the full working length — including the tips.
That is why the number of previous sharpenings alone says very little about the actual condition of the scissors.
Much more important is:
- how much metal was removed;
- whether the geometry was preserved;
- whether the scissors were dropped or damaged;
- how accurately the previous sharpenings were carried out.
Does the quality of the steel matter?
Yes. The properties of the steel affect how long the cutting edge retains its cutting performance.
But even high-quality steel does not allow you to say:
“These scissors can be sharpened another five or ten times.”
The remaining lifespan also depends on the design of the scissors, their current condition and their service history.
Why sharpening should not be postponed for too long
It may seem that the less often scissors are sharpened, the longer they will last.
But continuing to work with very dull or damaged scissors can cause the condition of the cutting edge to deteriorate further.
As a result, restoring them may require removing more metal than would have been necessary with timely servicing.

When the usable life really comes to an end
A high number of previous sharpenings does not automatically mean that it is time to replace the scissors.
If the geometry has been preserved and the scissors produce a consistent, clean cut after servicing, they can continue to be used.
Their usable life comes to an end when wear no longer allows correct performance to be restored without significantly altering the geometry.

There is no single correct number that answers the question:
“How many times can hairdressing scissors be sharpened?”
A better question is:
“How much usable life is left in this pair of scissors?”
That is determined not by the number of sharpenings, but by the actual condition of the tool.
Good sharpening restores performance while preserving as much of the scissors’ usable life as possible.
